On or around 1 PM on October 5th, 2013 an enormous fire erupted on Camp Pendleton. The fire created huge plumes of smoke and still rages on to this second. As of 9:45 PM, the official reports state that the fire has burn upwards of 1000 acres of land. 1000 acres!! Thats larger than St. Kitts and Nevis, larger than the Vatican city, and larger than Monaco. For those of you that dont know these are are countries. The fire was visible from over half a county away and 911 calls were reported from as far as the Murietta/ Temecula area. Over 200 firefighters have been dispatched to fight the blaze and in the over 11 hour battle that is still going on the fire is only 15% contained. Air tankers were dispatched, Helicopters, and the fire even forced the evacuation of homes on base, the hospital, and even damaged a couple of buildings. The families evacuated picked up what they could and moved, kids, pets and all to temporary housing and the Paige Field house gym. The good news though is that practically every food service industry in the area volunteered to help out. As far as I know Subway provided 300 Subs, Pizza Hut delivered 10 pizzas, and of course Dominos gave 20 pizzas to families and 40 pizzas directly to the men and women fighting the blaze (Dominos did this all while continuing to deliver to everyone else). All this food and effort is complimentary but judging by the situation I would say more effort is needed. I know the K9 Unit has been handing out kennels to families for their pets, and SEVERAL civilians and Marines have volunteered for the effort but anything to help would be appreciated. If you would like to provide assistance contact a Chaplain, any Chaplain, show up at the Paige Field house and talk to SSgt Young, or call the MPs on base. Thank you in advance. -Sgt Carlos
