On paying it forward... When I was 20, I took the train from Baldwin, NY into NYC to go salsa dancing. Bold? Sassy? Dumb? Well... yes. In the end, I missed the last train out of Penn Station. In just a little black dress and heels, I walked around the train station pretending not to panic as I entertained the idea of spending the night there. A young man approached me and said he had a taxi waiting for us outside. Are you kidding?... Do I look stupid? No he said. He invited me to bring a cop with me to check it out, which I did. I followed him the upstairs to the street level and he showed me the taxi cab, which was waiting for us. I checked the taxi-driver out and got into the cab. Still dubious about his intentions, I kept a distance, and a fist ready. He conducted himself like a total gentleman. He told me how he had recently moved back to Long Island to take care of his sick grandmother, and had hardly gotten the opportunity to go out, and that he saw me asking the train staff about how I might get home to my grandmothers house at 3am. He didnt want my grandmother up worrying about me. He paid for the whole cab fare (easily $80), refused my contribution, saying just Pay It Forward. Its been over 10 years and I still think about him sometimes. I hope life has been as kind to him as he was to me.
