On psychological health: In Western culture the mind is treated - TopicsExpress

On psychological health: In Western culture the mind is treated as an emergent quality, not of the brain, but of the will and some other entity (the spirit). This is a dangerous notion. From this we are tought that all forms of the mind are negotiable and superficial. From this we respond to those suffering from mental dissorder by telling them to stop being that way. What a crazy notion. If your leg was broken, and the someone told you to just stop having a broken leg, wha would you say? When the mind is viewed this way, we look at the aneurotypical and tell them to stop being so different. Focus all our energy on making them better (more ordinary). This is like telling someone to change their skin color. When the mind is a function of spirit, we respond to mental difficulty or abnormality through prayer and mysticism and woo. It makes sense, deal with the root of the roblem not the symptom, but its contingent on a falacy. On the reverse, when we see the mind as an emergent property of the physical brain, we can accept its limitations and its uniqueness. This is the only way to address mental health. Soldiers cannot simply by will and training, force their minds into being unaffected by the horrors and traumas of battle. Their brains react physically to physical stress, and their minds are thusly traumatized. In more mundain settings, mental health must be viewed as a vital maintenance. The stress of daily life must be countered whether through social interaction or introverted recovery. When you feel the need to vegg, that is not a sign of weakness of will, it is simply that your brain is sore fom the workout you are giving it. The mind can negotiate only temporarily, and all growth requres a period of restoration. Mental health days should be recognized by employers and any health coverage that does not cover mental health is substandard. In closinf, take care of your brain to take care of your mund. When you need to cry, cry. When you need to dance, dance. When you need to read, binge watch netflix, or take a bubble bath and blast enya, do so.
