On re-entry from NPS, I am typically a bit pessimistic about slam, its potential, and how much longer I can sustain my enthusiasm for it. But, one week after returning from Oakland, it is obvious that Spokane does not suffer those same existential crises. 18 poets signed up tonight. 18. And that was before I pulled the list, and told people who came in a bit late that they COULDNT sign up. 18. There were 92 people who payed the cover charge at the door. 92. These are not normal numbers for a city the size of Spokane, and these are numbers that Spokane seems to put up on an increasingly regular basis. You amaze me every single week, and twice a month at slams. Congratulations to all the first time readers, the returning poets slugging it out month after month, the fans who only want to cheer, and the judges who put up with my banter for two and a half hours and cant really leave, even though they might want to, you know, smoke or pee or something. Congratulations to Chadwick Aufderhar and Elizabeth Stoel Marlin, taking third and second place (I believe it was Lizs first time competing, too!), and to first-time competitor and champ Jansen! This is the kind of night that keeps me going. Thank you. Remember: In a world overrun with apathy, the man who cares is king. -- Elizabeth Stoel Marlin You are all kings.
