On the 06 August 2014, Inspector Petros Simamane and Volunteer - TopicsExpress

On the 06 August 2014, Inspector Petros Simamane and Volunteer Brenda Mamela were responding to a complaint in the Queensburgh area that had been called in and reported by a member of the public. While carrying out the investigation at the house, no problems were found with the animals as they were in acceptable condition, with adequate food, water and shelter. The owner however explained that her neighbour’s dogs were constantly fighting with the neighbouring house’s dogs through the fence, she had in fact heard them fighting just before Insp. Simamane and Brenda had arrived and she was going to see if they were ok. Insp. Simamane and Brenda arrived at the neighbours and were met by a very frantic owner who told them that during the fight, one of the dogs, Shadow, had fallen down the bank and was stuck by the river bank. They could just make Shadow out, lying motionless on the ground. Inspector Simamane made his way quickly down the steep bank to where Shadow lay. When they reached him, he was awake but was badly injured. A blanket was used to carry Shadow as he could not walk. Sampson, the other dog involved in the fight, was also badly bitten. Sampson and Shadow were both brought back to the Kloof and Highway SPCA clinic to be treated for their wounds and injuries. Both dogs were unneutered males and it is believed that this is part of the problem as to why they are fighting. Dogs seeking females in heat can become aggressive and may injure themselves and people in engaging in fights. Neutering male dogs, as well as cats, reduces the need to breed and can have a calming effect on them. Sampson was treated for his injuries and booked in to theatre the next day to be sterilised. Shadow however needed more rest and care after his ordeal and as soon as he was well enough, he was sterilised and returned to his home. Well done to Insp. Petros Simamane and Brenda for being in the right place at the right time. Every single investigation that is reported to the Kloof and Highway SPCA is investigated and taken seriously, regardless if no problems are found, we will respond. In responding to this investigation we were able to help two families with their dogs, and to educate them about how to best look after them moving forward to prevent future dog fights.
