On the 11th September Alex Greenwich MP – Independent member for Sydney had a 2nd reading of his Bill known as: Animal Welfare (Population Control Programs) Bill. The Bill would legalise, in the Sydney metropolitan areas, Trap Neuter and Release programs for people working with cat colonies and other wild animals like rabbits. Prior to this Bill the fines for releasing an animal could constitute ‘abandoning’ that animal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979. It could also breach the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974, which makes it an offence to liberate a non-native animal anywhere in New South Wales without a licence. There is a high success with such programs in other countries and we must do all we can to obtain legal status for people working to help wild animals. For too long all we have done in this country with wild animals is shoot, poison and stab them. Nature abhors a vacuum and those numbers quite naturally resume. And the whole awful saga is repeated and repeated. Millions of animals have suffered painful deaths, many people and companies have profited from this “quick fix” and this insupportable cycle continues. Wild animals and their supporters need your help NOW. Please contact your local MP – preferably a visit to their electoral office or an email or letter or phone call. Particularly if your local MP is Liberal or Labor party – explain to them that this bill will not supersede current methods – this will be IN CONJUNCTION with and has the potential to save the lives of trillions of animals over time. Please do this now so politicians hear this is very important to all of us.
