On the 1st day of October: 331 BC- Alexander the Great defeated Darius III of Persia in the Battle of Gaugamela. 1795 Belgium was conquered by France and Southern Netherlands annexed. 1829- South African college was founded in Cape Town (now, University of Cape Town) . 1891 and 1892, Stanford University and University of Chicago opened her doors respectively. 1895- Romanians in Constantinople were massacred, 1898- Jews expelled from Kiev (Then Russia). 1949- Peoples republic of China was proclaimed under Mao Zedong (the beginning of modern day communist China). 1952- 1st UHF Television station aired in Portland, Oregon. 1954- British colony of Nigeria became a FEDERATION. 1960- Nigeria gains independence from Britain 1961-East and West Cameroun merge as Federal republic of Cameroun. 1963-Nigeria becomes a republic but remained a part of the Commonwealth. 1975- Seychelles was granted self governance by Britain, that same day in Manila Philippines, BOXING CHAMP Mohammed Ali defeats Joe Fraser in a fight titled Thriller in Manila to claim World Heavyweight champion. 1977- Soccer legend Pele retires having scored 1281 goals in 1363 games. . 2000- Closing ceremony of XXVII Olympics in Sydney Australia. 2005- Bali Bombing occurred. 2010- Nigerian government celebrates her 50th independence with the World biggest cake worth more than half a million dollars of taxpayers money. 2013- The United States government had a partial shutdown due to political disagreements over operational spending. 2014- First Ebola case in the USA confirmed and quarantined; Australia sends mid air refuelling military aircrafts to support Allied forces in the war on the Islamic State.
