On the 27th of August 2014, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Human Rights Development with support from UNSOM and AMISOM, organized its maiden Human Rights Day celebrations in Mogadishu. The date of 27th August 2013 was gazzetted as a Human Rights Day when the Federal Government adopted a draft Post Transition Human Rights Road Map. The event brought together representatives from government and civil society and religious organizations. During the celebrations, the Minister of Women Affairs and Human Rights Development, H.E. Khadiijo Mohamed Diiriye, who was the key note speaker at the event, stressed the importance of the day to Somalia and highlighted progress so far made by the Federal Government in the area of human rights which included the ongoing review process of the draft bill for the establishment of the Human Rights Commission, the National Action Plan to address Gender Based Violence, the adoption of the human rights roadmap among other important developments. The Minister thanked UNSOM, AMISOM and other partners for the support it was providing to the ministry in these important areas and looked forward for further stronger collaboration with the ministry. The first celebration to mark the human rights day is significant in light of the fact that the Ministry, supported by UNSOM, AMISOM and other partners has accelerated consultations on the human rights roadmap exactly one year after its adoption and the progress to establish a national human rights institution with the last review meeting having been held on the 25th of August 2014.
