On the 28th of March, the free world witnessed the launch of Darren Aronofskys film Noah. It relates the story of the patriarch Noah, who was told by God to build an Ark, as He had plans to flood the world. The film stars Russel Crowe in the title row alongside a host of famous actors. IMDB voters have judged the work worthy of a 7.2, and it would seem that Crowe depicts the patriarch as a normal human being with doubts, questions, and fears. In short, to all appearances, it should be worth watching. In the free world, that is. Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Malaysia, and many Middle-Eastern and North-African countries in which religion is more important than common sense or science, have banned the film, because people are not supposed to make images of prophets. Egypt has prohibited release because it would provoke the feelings of believers. I thought visiting a cinema was still a choice, rather than an enforced measure? Ah, well, I guess theyre too busy preparing the largest mass execution of this still young century. That is far less provocative than a motion picture. In case youre wondering why Afghanistan hasnt joined the group of banning fanatics: they simply have no cinemas, so the film neednt be stopped in its tracks. Film is haram. God forbid you have fun. Indonesia has also banned the film as being contradictive to the teachings of Islam. Apparently, that is a reason to frustrate healthy culture. We are, it seems, not supposed to watch anything that does not sit well with the rulers of this country. This enlightened bunch of God-fearing people have earlier reduced, in the national curriculum, the hours of study for science, biology, mathematics, and chemistry in favour of more time for the study of religion. It is more important to understand religion than learn how to prevent unwanted pregnancy, do basic arithmetic, understand the properties of substances, or simply be able to predict what will happen to a body in free fall. What was the name of that bunch of half-witted apes in Nigeria again? Boko Haram? We are eagerly awaiting the day that half this countrys population is judged unfit to study at all, as their only function in life is to pray, and produce offspring. A ban, as said, in Indonesia, on the film Noah. Guess what Im downloading now? Dear people: religion is beautiful; but it should never be forced upon others, especially by governments. Allow people to think, to develop, and to become independent, free-thinking individuals who are able to judge for themselves. Religion is something you apply to your own life; not to that of others. Ah. It appears my download has completed. Anyone want to come over for dinner? Well be showing a film.
