On the Cairns tragedy, Im full of admiration for the way senior police have handled themselves this morning while dealing with the media. At one point I thought the assistant commissioner was on the verge of tears. However, many posts this morning (including some from media organisations who should know better) are misleading. The woman concerned has been arrested over the deaths, but has not been charged. This is really important. While shes under arrest comment is fine, but once charged, the matter becomes sub judice; defined as before a court of law or a judge. Any comment could then be seen to influence a fair trial, which could be months, if not years, away. You could also be charged with contempt of court, although thats hardly likely. At the moment comment is fine, but that may well change soon if the woman is charged. I just thought it was worth mentioning after seeing so many incorrect and misleading posts. Not the best of days here in paradise.
