On the Job! Residential Structure Fire January 24, 2000 – 1007 Hancock Street Fire broke out on the first floor of a Hancock Street home causing an estimated $15,000 in damage and blocking traffic for more than an hour. Heavy smoke poured from the front of the two story home just before 10 a.m. The homes two occupants, a mother and son were not home when smoke was spotted by a passerby. The fire was caused by a defective space heater cord that was repaired with tape. The cord caught the back of a sofa on fire, which sent flames spreading through the room and eventually the entire first floor. At one point, flames reached out the front door of the home. The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes, but Firefighters remained on the scene to check for hot spots and clear smoke out of the apartment. Two of the three apartments in the home were occupied, but no one was home and no one was injured during the fire. Information obtained from a Sandusky Register article.
