On the Metro: Malled. Got me thinking. I went to the mall - TopicsExpress

On the Metro: Malled. Got me thinking. I went to the mall yesterday. The mall. The place where over-commercialized designer products are peddled to a zombie-like mutant, where having a large a glamorous purse in one hand and several larger sized store bags in the other, while clutching a cell phone and repeating the terms Oh My Gawd and Like frequently, is the norm. Meanwhile, Department store employees, dressed in New York runway stylish garb, or something a cat threw up (I cant tell the difference), would pamper passers-by with compliments and invitations to sit and sample and ply on fabrics not meant for larger-humans consumption. However, in the midst of this chaos was a glorious and precious truth, often untold. Because, around this time of year, this typically selfish indulgence of retail gratification becomes intentions of joy. People, grabbed by seasonal thoughts, begin the ritual of buying gifts for others. Granted, it is still with the intention of drawing attention to themselves. Nevertheless... Presents are bought of the most flagrantly over-the-top styles. The more expensive or the most flamboyant, the better. A scarf, known to simply warm the neck in cold conditions, at $174.99 now becomes the element by which the fashion industry will form a circle. But also, it will delight someones BFF to a point of giddy screams only loud enough for small dogs to perk their ears in curiosity for its significance. Nevertheless, this time of year, it is the thought that counts more than the bill. And, in the end, isnt that what is important? For all the piped in seasonal music, the strategically placed wrapped gift boxes covered in eye catching bows, and festive sweaters worn by staff, the benefit here isnt only boosts of economic numbers and increases in the consumer price index. It is simpler than that. All those people there, dancing from store to store, sampling smells and touching cloths, are there to simply bring joy to someone. To try to encourage that ecstatic moment of discovery once the wrapping is tossed and the envelopes of the box is opened. Joy to the world, the lord did come... And he brought his wallet. The lady and her minions also brought theirs, and thus, the season of giving commences with the dance of dodging purses, bags and boxes, the clicking and clacking of cement and marble floors, all in search of that elusive prize that makes a loved one smile. All in search if that something that with make you the best person ever, because how did you know they wanted this or that? How? Because they are at the mall. And the mall knows. The mall... A place where gift giving dreams can come true. A place where the economy is resurrected from slumber, based upon the notions of people wanting that certain something that says they are special. A designer bag. A piece of jewelry. A pair of jeans that they saw being worn by a reality star. Make up as prescribed by a professional, trained in everything Hollywood. Its the mall. Still, with all that a rational person can say about this over commercialized Mecca of a shoppers dream space, there is an overwhelming goodness about it during this time of year. This place, called a mall, is the start of joyous moments, hopes that they will like the thoughts that counts, and a societal desire to make the world a little better and a whole lot more (shout it out) FABULOUS!!!! Tis the season, folks. To the mall we go.
