On the Metro: expectation. Got me Thinking. Listening to Stevie Wonder lyrics, while trying to block out the sounds of the train... Looking back on when I was a little nappy headed boy. Then my only worry was for Christmas what would be my toy. Even though we sometimes would not get a thing. We were happy with the joy the day would bring... I wish those days could come back once more. Why did those days ev-er have to go. I wish those days could come back once more. Why did those days ever have to go. Cause I loved them so. Remember that feeling of almost no responsibility, accountability or pressure? When life was just receiving whatever came our way. What happened? Expectation. Thats what. We grew up with societal measurements that pushed us to believe that we need stuff, we need to get that stuff in a certain way, and that failure was when you have nothing to show in your garage, on your finger or with a title beside your name. But, when we achieve that level of excellence, are we satisfied or as happy as we were when we owned nothing, owed nothing and expected little or now reward? Are we better off than we were as poor children who played from dusk till dawn, laughed at the silliest of fart jokes, and didnt care if we got a stain on our Sunday best? Perhaps no. Because today , as I hear the clunk clack clunk of tracks, despite turning up the volume on my iPhone, Im reminded of the immovable modes we all jump on each day, expecting rewards for a job well done. We expect that the more successful we are, the more money well make. The more money we make, the more toys we can afford at Christmas. The more toys, the more joy. These expectations of that joy have been clicked, clunked and clacked into our heads, without much thought of the joys of the lack of expectation we once enjoyed. As a kid, did you even know what a calendar was on months other that December? Did being an over-play-a-Holic enter your vocabulary? Were you stressed out from having to share the sand box? Did we expect expectation? I dont think so. But then again, it is hard to think with the slowing, approaching station, clack clack clack clack on the way to work this morning. Im expecting the train doors to open, and so this Monday officially begins. Time to take the headphones off. I wish those days could come back once more. Why did those days ever have to go. I wish those days could come back once more. Why did those days ever have to go? -Stevie Wonder. (Sigh). Happy Monday! youtu.be/iTWZVQeyak8
