On the basis of his African blood, Pushkin was drawn into the struggle to overturn prevalent notions about human classification and to raise American African consciousness. A century after his death, the greatest poet and writer of the Golden Age of Russian Literature became part of the cultural ferment of the heady American organisation that came to be known as the Harlem Renaissance (Hasty, 2006).
