On the build-up to Bonfire Night, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service is joining forces with Carlisle City Council, Cumbria Constabulary, Riverside Housing to stamp out dangerous ‘hot spots’. This will include a series of co-ordinated activities including skip drops for Riverside tenants alongside enforcement measures including test purchasing, removal of unauthorised bonfires and high visibility patrols by the police. Agencies are asking residents not to build fires in dangerous places and to make sure they are not on land owned by the City Council, unless formal permission has been granted. Anyone wishing to organise their own bonfire on council land, should also contact the City Council, on 01228 817000, to ask permission. Residents can also use the same number to report any unofficial bonfires or they can email [email protected] or call the Police out of hours non-emergency number on 101. Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service is advising Carlisle residents not to build bonfires too early and not close to buildings, roads or railways, and never put foam-filled furniture, tyres or aerosols onto a bonfire; skips should be removed immediately when full.
