On the face of it, people are quite afraid of human diversity and look to their social institutions to limit or eradicate it. Harlan Lane, When the mind hears: a history of the Deaf first sentence of the Foreward. Provocative, eh? I am re-reading this book. Last time I read it was when I was a post-doc in Toronto in 1993. I would highly recommend the book to those people who are not afraid of a very long, well-researched book dealing with complex subjects that nevertheless describes a concrete history and tells a complete story without trying to cut to the bottom line.
