On the failure of the 1:12 referendum in Switzerland: There is - TopicsExpress

On the failure of the 1:12 referendum in Switzerland: There is a concerning view which seems to have taken hold in a lot of relatively leftist countries, Switzerland and New Zealand included. It proposes that because we are at the top of the world in some aspect (schooling, equality, welfare) we should not strive to better ourselves. This seems quite evident in the Swiss argument against restricting the top wage of a company to that of 12 times its lowest paid worker. Switzerland has one of the most equal salary distributions in the world. This is no reason to be complacent, it is not correct to sit on your hands because everybody else is doing worse. We should always be striving to better ourselves, we cant judge how well we are doing based on others, but rather based on the effects of our actions. It is not good enough to just be the best in the world.
