On the first Wednesday of every month, SciCafe, a popular after-hours series, brings together inquisitive minds for an informal evening of cocktails and conversation about cutting-edge science topics with experts from the field. On November 5, we’ll be discussing Antibiotics and Obesity. Microbiology researchers have shown in the past couple of years that populations of microbes living in and on the human body affect their hosts’ health. Physician and microbiologist Martin Blaser will discuss how changes in the human microbiome brought on by microbe-killing behaviors such as overuse of antibiotics and hand sanitizers, as well as an increasing prevalence of caesarean sections, may be contributing to an increase in chronic conditions including obesity, allergic disorders, and diabetes. Additionally, attendees should arrive early to participate in Microbiome Research! Learn more about this program and find many additional resources about Dr. Blaser and this research: bit.ly/1vCxTUm
