On the heels of a report by an inspector general of rampant corruption in the Environmental Protection Agency, more allegations of scandal continue to be heaped upon the Obama Administration this week. According to a report from the Treasury Inspector General, at least 2,000 pages of documents pertaining to the sharing of private taxpayer information between the IRS and the White House were found. The IG produced the documents only after a court-ordered release of documentation. The order came after a conservative non-profit, Cause of Action, filed suit against the IRS for its refusal to comply with a Freedom of Information Request, However, the IG’s office cited federal tax code which apparently bars the government from releasing the documents to the non-profit due to their personal nature, “These pages consist of return information protected by 26 U.S.C. § 6103 and may not be disclosed absent an express statutory exception.” The attorney for Cause of Action, Dan Epstein, responded to the report, “That indicates scandal… We know for a fact that the IRS broke the law… If there is any evidence that the White House requested (unauthorized taxpayer information), then people in the White House are going to be implicated.” Epstein hopes Congress will take note of Cause for Action’s involvement and begin investigating the issue directly. This could result in the “express statutory exception” needed to follow the case further.
