On the lighter side: In August of 1945 Dad took Jimmy and me out to Walker AFB where we approached the Enola Gay--the B-29 which dropped the atomic bombs on Japan--which had returned to its home base. There we shook hands with Colonel Paul Tibbets, the pilot who flew the bombing runs and thanked him for his part in ending WWII, then patted the belly of the Enola Gay! Only much later did I discover that the approximately 100,000 Japanese were killed in the raids so that we would not have to invade Japan--in the course of which it had been estimated, based on the Okinawa casualty figures, that approximately 2 1/2 million Japanese and Americans would have been killed instead.
