On the morning of September 6th, 2013, at 01:27 AM, Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) Truck 17 & Rescue 18 were dispatched to the location of East Willow St. under the 405 Freeway for the report of a 19 year old in full arrest. As LBFD Truck 17 arrived on scene they saw two citizens performing bystander CPR. Two of the Good Samaritans involved in the incident, were traveling eastbound on Willow St. under the 405 Freeway, when they noticed a car had pulled off to the right shoulder with a person lying on the ground. It was quickly determined that the 19 year old male was not breathing and had no pulse. One of the individuals activated the “911” system and the other individual along with another bystander began administering 2-person CPR. They continued their heroic efforts until Long Beach Fire units arrived on scene. As the crew of Truck 17 approached, the rescuers checked the patient and found that his pulse had returned and the patient began to breath on their own. The willingness of these individuals to stop and help a fellow citizen, their ability to properly identify a medical emergency and to calmly perform CPR and manage the scene, contributed to the successful outcome of this event. Great job!
