On the non-physical nature of perceiving meaning: “Words are symbols or codes signifying something – and the coding and decoding activities required in using language presuppose an entity that can endow and perceive meaning in symbols. Can a material object perceive meaning? By its very nature, the act of comprehending the meaning of something is non-physical. Moreover many words we commonly use designate things that either have not been perceived (e.g., quarks) or cannot be perceived by the senses (e.g., angels) – but they have meaning. The acts of giving meaning or seeing meaning is again irreducibly immaterial and are carried on all the time as illustrated by our use of language.” [Theos, Anthropos, Christos: A Compendium of Modern Philosophical Theology. Ed. By Roy Abraham Varghese (New York: Peter Lang, 2000), pg. 6].
