On the northeast corner of First and Wilkinson Street were located the residence of Mrs. H. G. Carnell and the Loretto Guild. The Loretto was a residence run by Dominican Sisters for single women who worked or went to school downtown. Originally located on Franklin Street, the organization moved to 127 West First Street in 1928. The Loretto provided safe and affordable rooms, as well as a meeting place for Catholic groups like the Dayton Catholic Women’s Club. The building was demolished and the land turned into a parking lot in 1977. I have included a postcard showing the interior of the Loretto.
