On the occasion of Veterans Day, Im sharing a remarkable recent find! My father-in-law, Philip Walters (died in 2001), was a glider pilot on September 17, 1944 during the largest airborne operation ever or since--The Battle of Arnhem (Operation Market Garden). He managed to safely land his glider but he was shot up, soon captured, and taken to a hospital in Germany where they removed a kidney and part of his lung. He spent the rest of the war in a prison camp--but I never knew which one. While looking through some old records for his discharge papers (to qualify my Mother-In-Law for Veterans Aid and Attendance), I found his prison ID and U.S. dog tag. Stalag Luft 1, #7463. On a website all about Stalag Luft 1 I found a photo of a guy getting a haircut with the same shape and style of my father-in-laws ID. There is a remarkable story about his experience written up in the NY Times after he returned. More to come on that...
