On the occasion of yet another fraudulent sham of an election in Syria, please take 2 minutes and 18 seconds of your time to watch this BBC news clip about the dreadful and ongoing war in that otherwise beautiful country. It may be one of the most gut-wrenching things youll see this year. This war must stop. What can you do about it? Fellow Canadians, please consider writing your Member of Parliament and/or the Prime Minister (just put their name and House of Commons, Ottawa on the envelope - no postage required) to ask them 1) to increase Canadas assistance to aid and relief agencies working with Syrian refugees and, especially within Syria; and 2) enable and facilitate the immigration of a larger number of Syrian refugees to Canada. Historically, Canada has taken roughly 10% of the outflux of refugees from other humanitarian crises, but we are lagging well behind in the case of Syria. We were recently asked to take 10,000 Syrian refugees by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, but even that number does not nearly approach our typical 10% commitment. Dont hesitate to remind your MPs or the PM that, unless you are First Nations, we were all immigrants once.
