On the other end of the respect continuum, Bobby Abreu retired. - TopicsExpress

On the other end of the respect continuum, Bobby Abreu retired. Our family drove from Dallas to Houston to watch our beloved Phillies play. One of the players in particular that we wanted to see was Bobby Abreu. What a hitter! We took a tour of the then named Enron Field and at the end we got to watch both teams in their batting practice. We were on the first row above the Phillies dugout. After Abreu put on a show he came over to sign autographs. My daughter was probably 7 at the time. She had a ball she wanted him to sign. I reached for it to toss it to him but my daughter, being the stubborn person that she was (is :-)) did not let me toss the ball to him. Instead she did and it never made it to him. It fell in front of Abreu into the Phillies dugout. He looked at her, smirked and went on to the next person. He never went into the dugout to get the ball, sign it and give it back to my crying daughter. Lost respect for him that day that he has never earned back in my eyes.
