On the road again (Going down memory lane - Part 2) By Wayne Moody As I promised, more about The Heartmen Quartet and my travels with them as assistant manager. After many more singings, Rodney and myself started talking about going to Gold City’s Homecoming in Gadsden, AL. We talked it over with the boys and they were all for it. So after more singings, the weekend finally came for us to go to Gadsden. We left McShan Friday afternoon for the Saturday afternoon singing. We had stopped and eaten supper Friday night before going onto the motel and Saturday morning our baritone singer, Brian Brasher, got up very sick. About 9 a.m. I took Brian to the emergency room at the hospital. Rodney went on to the Convention Center, where the tryout singing started at 10. The Heartmen were to sing at 12:30. Well, we told the woman doctor at the ER that she had to get Brian well enough to sing at 12:30. She told me he would never be able to sing at 12:30 because he had food poisoning. She had him knocked out of it from 10 until 12. Then at 12, I told the doctor and nurse we had to go, because Brian had gotten up and had his clothes on, so the good doctor let him check out. We got to the Convention Center, where the other members got his suit on him. He would get still and go to sleep, but when it got time for them to go on stage, they led him onto the stage and he stood there smiling. The four of them sang their hearts out and came in second place. Rodney and the boys had already loaded the bus and after the singing was over, we left out for a Saturday night singing somewhere. We stopped and got Brian medicine, and he was getting some good sleep as we traveled to the next singing. Coming back to the present time, last Sunday afternoon we had a good fish fry at our church. Many thanks to Bruce and Marguerite Hamner for providing the fish. Also thanks to Bill Trull and Bob Newman for helping Bruce fry the fish and the ladies of the church for helping in the kitchen and all the great desserts they brought. Until next week, God Bless.
