On the road to dazzling By Sue Lawrence Mattanja Bradley - TopicsExpress

On the road to dazzling By Sue Lawrence Mattanja Bradley travels “on the road of dazzling” in the song The Back Porch of My Dreams in Bradley’s Circus new album Kickin’ But Not High. That road began with Bradly being a “fan of the pain-train of blues” and that train just keeps on going. Bradley’s Circus has been together since Mattanja met guitarist Andre van den Boogaart seven years ago and realized she had “finally met the person I could do that bluezy stuff with”. Joining them is Lidewij Veenhuis, best female harmonica in the Netherlands, an honour she reluctantly takes on. She loves her role in the band where she can “sometimes takes a step forward, sometime a step back”. Together they step forward and use the beauty of blues music where Bradley finds “there’s a lot of freedom to jam away and you can change it and it’s a basic song and there’s space and freedom to experiment with blues”. Bradley’s experience with men have fuelled many of her songs: “Men are not angels..and a lot of men are dogs. I think I met a lot of dogs”. The power gained from being vulnerable through love and then singing about the journey acts as therapy: “it’s great to be able to work through your emotions via the songs you write and every time you perform a song and sing it you live through it and you also work through it”. She has used that vulnerability to fuel her music, her performances, making her the victor in love’s weary war. After I had interviewed Bradley, another musician commented on the fact that she was pretty. At first enraged by this flimsy summary, I had to agree- she’s damn dazzling and with Bradley’s Circus, are paving the road their way. Check out Bradley Circus’s new album at bradleyscircus
