Im often asked what I miss most about not being in the military, since I retired and am away from the military community. After spending over half my life doing something I truly enjoyed (mainly orthopedics), I can easily say I miss the military environment. Its kinda funny but the mentality of the people not affiliated with anything military or structured is completely different than what Id been accustomed to. Around a military base/post, you always knew somebody had your back... people were pleasant... you knew where you stood with most people... there was some level of mutual respect... people cared about things (in general)... Its not like that in the real world. Nobody really cares if youre coming or going. Its a shock initially, but you begin to appreciate those little things you once thought were irritating. So, if youre still in or around military people, take the time to make someones day and speak back. Smiling a little wont hurt either. Being nicer to others isnt just something expected in the military, it should be a requirement in society. — feeling hopeful with Sherri L. Collins.
