On the wall in our guest room is a small black and white picture - TopicsExpress

On the wall in our guest room is a small black and white picture of four smiling people. The picture was shot in the early 60s and features four members of the 1924 graduating class of Johnson City High School. Second from the right is Lyndon Johnson. Second from the left is my great aunt, Georgia Cammack. We called her aunt Pug. Whenever I look at the picture I am struck by how genuine the smiles are. I am particularly impressed with the look LBJ and my aunt share as though at some point she did him a great kindness and he is now remembering it with her. It’s not that farfetched. After all, her daddy was the tax assessor collector in 1916 when the new courthouse was built; a year after LBJ’s family came to Johnson City. Being the daughter of an influential politician must have inferred some slight social status on her such that a welcoming smile or kindness to a stranger would be remembered years later. Of course that’s all conjecture but that’s the fun of pictures and memories and an aunt who knew a president.
