On the weekend of January 16-18, Catholic parishes, houses of religious orders, and Protestant churches were attacked in different parts of the West African nation of Niger in response to European magazine caricatures of Muhammad. Sunday Mass was canceled in Niamey, the nation’s capital, following attacks on six parishes there. 285 Christians fled to a military camp. On January 19, the nation’s government reported that at least 45 churches had been burned down and 10 people killed. The nation of 17.1 million is 80% Muslim and 0.1% Catholic.
