On this 30th day of Gratitude Month I salute the HUMAN SPIRIT. One attribute we all share is the basic instinct to survive. From the tiniest infant to the most frail senior, there seems to be unquenchable thirst to thrive. We each are dealt challenges in our lives and we must decide how to handle what we have been given. A childhood friend of mine, Susi has been living with MS. This debilitating disease has robbed her of much of her physical function but not her zest for life. Susi can no longer take the neighborhood strolls she so enjoyed but now she cruises in her motorized chair. Her favorite days or those when the weather is warm and the neighbors sprinklers are one. giddy as a little child, she drives her chair through the spray and one more time for good measure. This past summer, my daughter Tiffany and her boyfriend Brandon traveled from Utah to North Dakota. On their return trip, they had truck trouble and were stuck in the middle of nowhere without cell service. A semi driver stopped to help. This man was kind enough to transport them into town twice for parts and tools. The help continued from the Parts Store owner. We were all grateful to these two strangers for their kind gestures. At Catholic Community Services downtown Salt Lake City, you will find Jeff. He left a lucrative career cooking in elite restaurants to head up the kitchen at CCS which serves meals to the homeless. Jeff always has a smile on his face, a laugh in his voice and the most humble spirit. He calls me regularly to pick up food, supplying our pantry with wonderful produce, lots of bakery, sometimes meat and a variety of miscellaneous items which makes it feel like Christmas morning each time we load up the van. And ALWAYS he thanks us for taking it off his hands! What a gift he gives. So to me, the human spirit is the gift that continually replenishes as you give. No matter where you are in the journey of your life, no matter what trials you are having, the Human Spirit is there to get you through it. Embrace your spirit, do random acts of kindness and enjoy your journey!
