Cleveland Leader “Rube” Waddell, after his fishing sojourn on the St. Clair flats, used his kalsomine brush with deadly effect in the first game, allowing the Larrupers but three hits. He also gave two passes to first. Six men in all reached this sack, but that was the limit of their journey. Large Monument is Erected Over Waddells Grave SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Aug. 29 [1923] — A massive monument of gray granite appropriately inscribed and standing more than six feet high was erected yesterday afternoon over the grave of George Edward (Rube) Waddell, famous old-time baseball pitcher, who died here in 1914, and is buried in a local burial park. The monument was purchased by the National and Texas leagues and a few individual subscribers, and cost slightly more than $500. Waddells grave was marked for nine years by nothing more than a faded wooden slab from which the elements had virtually erased the name.
