On this Day in Weather History...26 Oct In 2012, Tropical Storm Sandy continued to wreak havoc as she moved in a northerly manner over the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Among the casualties occurred around 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras where a replica of the H M S Bounty was caught and eventually sank on the 29th. Of the 16 crew, 2 perished of which one was the captain. In Virginia, while 75 to 80 mph winds lashed the coast where 8 to 10 inch rainfalls drenched the area, a blizzard raged in Southwest Virginia where 1 to 2 feet of snow overwhelmed the region. Close to 1 million residents may have lost power. In Maryland, heavy rains, heavy snow and high winds shut down all major transportation with power lost for 50,000 to 100,000 people. In West Virginia, a blizzard raged over most areas with snowfalls ranging from around 1 foot in lower elevations while 2 TO 3 feet buried most of the Appalachians. In 1988, severe thunderstorms moving out of North and Northeast Texas spawned 5 tornadoes in Louisiana in the morning. While the tornadoes were considered weak, gusts around 75 mph tore through Jennings, Louisiana. One was killed in Northwest Louisiana when a tree fell onto the vehicle he was driving 45 miles south of Shreveport. In 1950, the temperature in Wichita reached 90 degrees. This is the latest 90 degree reading ever observed in the city. In 1859, New York City had their earliest substantial snow of record as four inches blanketed the city.
