On this Day in Weather History...3 Jan In 1949, two F3 tornadoes struck Southeast Kansas. The first twister possessed a track 18 miles long and averaged 150 yards wide that crossed Eastern Wilson and Western Neosho Counties. Seven homes were destroyed along with 12 miles of power lines. The second twister possessed a track 25 miles long and averaged 150 yards wide that struck Northern Allen and Southern Anderson Counties where 2 farm homes and 3 barns were destroyed. In 1990, a winter storm in the Southwestern U.S. spread snow across Colorado and New Mexico. Heavy snow buried Southwestern Colorado with 13 inches reported at Wolf Creek Pass. The snow spread into the Central Plains during the day with 6 inches reported in Garden City, Kansas. In 1998, 1/2 to 1 inch of ice accumulated causing numerous accidents over parts of South Central Kansas. In 2000, a band of 8 to 11 inches of snow fell across Southern Yuma County into Northern Kit Carson County in Colorado. The heaviest snow fell during the night. Brisk winds also produced significant drifting of snow.
