On this Day in Weather History... In 1980, horrific Hurricane Allen came ashore just north of Brownsville Texas. Maintaining Category 5 status for the longest duration of any Atlantic hurricane, Allen became only the second hurricane to unleash winds that reached 190 mph. The Lower Rio Grande Valley was inundated by around 20 inches of rain, while 15 inches swamped San Antonio. Allen also spawned 29 tornadoes. One twister that struck Austin caused around $100 million damage, making it the costliest tropical cyclone spawned tornado on record. Overall 249 people were killed, mostly in Haiti and the United States. The hurricane caused around $1 billion of damage. In 1856, a disaster occurred on an island just off the Louisiana coast where 140 vacationers drowned when a 5 foot wave swept over the island during a hurricane.
