On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, it is well past time for our movement to have a serious conversation. Too often the oppressed become the oppressors, and if there is one place our transgender sisters and brothers should be guaranteed fairness and equality, it is within the realm of LGBT advocacy. Yet time and time again our transgender and gender non-conforming colleagues are passed over for promotion, tokenized, or completely excluded from the hiring process. This is more than shameful, it is hypocrisy, it is transphobia. If we are ever to garner full and lived equality we must first reflect upon, own, and overcome our own biases. For we will only end discrimination as a unified community, fighting with one mission and advocating in solidarity. I implore every person reading this message to look deep into yourself and to make sure that equality is more than your message, for it must be our truth. The bottom line is that what hurts us most is not the vitriol of our opposition, it is the disrespect of our allies. When we see bias we are duty bound to call it out - especially when it is coming from those that should know better...
