On this Winter Solstice, which marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere, I cant stop thinking about this article I read in Fridays NY Times. Its called BRING ON THE DARK, and it discusses the harm that the invention of electrical lighting did to our psyches and our bodies. As the author says, its no wonder that people have trouble sleeping and are out of sorts all the time--the lights are always on. Before electric lighting, people tended to go to bed soon after dark. They wakened a couple of times in the night, read, took walks, made love, etc. Then they went back to sleep and woke up refreshed at dawn. Anyway, this is a really interesting article about the value of darkness. Heres the link. nytimes/2014/12/20/opinion/why-we-need-the-winter-solstice.html?_r=0
