On this date 238 years ago, the delegates assembled in Philadelphia took up the question of independence. They were specifically debating the document submitted by the Committee of Five, but largely written by Thomas Jefferson. Selected by his fellow committee members to write the Declaration of Independence because of his writing talent, Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration in five days, using his skill to compose one of America’s most well-known and treasured statement of principles. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” What are your thoughts on the Declaration of Independence?
