On this date 59 years ago, the new J.J. Newberry store opened on Cookman Ave in Asbury Park. My dad was relocated from Worcester, MA to be the manager of the new store. The newspaper article described it this way. Located on the three spacious shopping floors will be 37 complete departments including costume jewelry, millinery, childrens and misses school clothes, footwear for the entire family, ladies nylon bar, bedding, yard goods, drapery fabrics, a hobby line of toys, framed pictures, rugs, small furniture, housewares, small electrical appliances, lamps and, lampshades, dinnerware, mens and boys wear, Infants wear, canaries, tropical fish, goldfish and supplies, potted plants, fall bulbs, plant foods and soils, ladies dresses, coats and suits, sportswear, curtains and drapes and a slipcover department. Foods and fountain specialties will be served at a 40-stool luncheonette. Located on the main floor will be a large snack bar and takeout food department. Another quick-service snack bar will be located In the downstairs salesroom. Features of the new store include an escalator to the second floor, air conditioning and fluorescent lighting.
