On this date, January 23rd, in 1910, costume designer Irene Sharaff was born. Nominated for fifteen Academy Awards, costumer Irene Sharaff once declared “you can acquire chic and elegance, but style itself is a a rare thing.” During her long and distinguished career, Ms. Sharaff became known for her meticulous attention to detail and her sense of color, as well as for her versatility in adapting to many genres and time periods. On Broadway, Ms. Sharaff designed the costumes for several shows directed and/or choreographed by Jerome Robbins, including ‘Billion Dollar Baby,’ ‘The King and I ’ and ‘West Side Story.’ Ms. Sharaff eventually attracted the attention of Hollywood, where her designs for film included ‘Meet Me in St. Louis,’ ‘An American in Paris,’ ‘Guys and Dolls,’ ‘The King and I,’ ‘Flower Drum Song,’ ‘West Side Story’ and many more.
