On this date, November 14th, in 1900, composer Aaron Copland was born. His most popular film scores include ‘Our Town’ (1940) and ‘The Heiress’ (1949), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Score. He composed the ballets ‘Rodeo’ (1942) and ‘Appalachian Spring’ (1944), for which he received the Pulitzer Prize. In 1954, Jerome Robbins directed Coplands only full-length opera, The Tender Land at New York City Opera. In 1986, Robbins also choreographed a ballet set to Copland’s ‘Quiet City.’ The music was an orchestral interlude composed in 1940 drawn from incidental music Copland had written a year earlier for Irwin Shaw′s play of the same name. The last ballet Copland composed (in 1959), “Dance Panels” was commissioned by Jerome Robbins for his company, Ballets: U.S.A, with expectations that it would premiere in the company’s summer appearance at the Spoleto Festival. The score was not completed in time, however, and Robbins instead created a work danced in silence (titled Moves), using the score’s underlying rhythmic counts. https://youtube/watch?v=jjIpoD_WbBs
