On this date in 1832, the Sauk Chief Blackhawk attempted to re-cross the Mississippi back into Iowa from Wisconsin to save his people by complying with a treaty that removed them from their land along the banks of the Rock River in Illinois. Blackhawk attempted the crossing, but was turned back by a steam-powered gunship named Warrior. As the band turned back onto land to regroup, they became boxed in by the US Cavalry advancing down the bluffs. The military began indiscriminately firing on men, women, and children. Blackhawk was captured after the massacre at Bad Axe having lost over 300 of his people.
