On this date in 1865 Schuberts Unfinished Symphony premiered in Vienna. No one knows why Schubert never finished this symphony. Many guess that it is tied in to the start of his fight with syphilis (the disease that eventually killed him six years later). What we know today as Schuberts Unfinished Symphony is two movements: an Allegro moderato and Andante con moto, and a scherzo with a nearly completed in piano score but with only two pages orchestrated. It has long been theorized that Schubert may have sketched a finale which instead became the big B minor entracte from his incidental music to Rosamunde. It is a beautiful piece of music unfinished or not and I agree that it is one of the greatest symphonies written.
