On this date in 1926, Joe Paterno was born. Never has a man been so revered one day and so reviled the next. A coaching legend who sent countless players to the NFL and graduated a high percentage of student athletes, was accused of covering up for Mike Sandusky after discovery of his child abuse. The Freeh Report deduced by reading 15,000 documents a day, that Paterno and three other school officials covered for Sandusky since 2001. The Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvannia, Frank Fina who investigated and prosecuted the Sandusky case, stated that he found no evidence that Paterno was involved in a cover-up. As a result of the incident, Paterno was fired, his statue was removed from in front of Penn States stadium, his name was removed from trophies and places of honor at his alma mater, Brown University. Its one of those shadowy situations. Heres a guy who donated over $4 million to Penn State, raised over $13.5 million for their library and was involved in countless other charities and yet hes been labeled a child abuse enabler. I was always a big fan of Joes but Im not sure how to judge him. Bob Costas thinks he was treated unfairly along with other journalists. But in the end, it all comes down to Joes own words. I didnt do enough....I shouldve done more.
