On this date in 1942 – Major General Clarence Tinker leads a batch of early-model Consolidated B-24 Liberators on attack against Japanese units during the Battle of Midway but is shot down. His aircraft is seen to go down, taking him, and eight other crew to their deaths. Tinker was the first American general to die in World War II; his body was never recovered. Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City is named in his honor.
