On this date in 1946, Bernstein conducted the premiere of his and Jerome Robbins ballet “Facsimile.” “Facsimile” was commissioned by American Ballet Theatre, and composed in the three weeks between the close of the 1946 season at Tanglewood and the opening of the New York City Symphony season. It was an intense ballet, with three principal dancers, two male and one female, depicting three insecure people in a tumultuous love triangle. The intense nature of the ballet led ABT to revise it, lightening its tone, and even adding some vague humor. The revised work was first performed in April 1947.
