On this date in 1957, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer premiered the Elvis Presley film Jailhouse Rock at Loews State Theater, 152 South Main St. in Memphis, Tennessee. It became the number 14 film of the year, grossing $4 million at the box office ($34 million, adjusted for inflation), about four times its production cost. The films soundtrack was the work of famed songwriting duo Jerry Leiber (1933-2011) and Mike Stoller (b. 1933). When Joachim Aberbach (1910-1992), the director of the music publishing company, discovered in April 1957 that they had yet to begin work on the project, he locked them in their hotel room by blocking the door with a sofa, saying he would not let them out until they had created the requisite material. Four hours later, I Want to Be Free, Treat Me Nice, (Youre So Square) Baby I Dont Care, and Jailhouse Rock were all in the can. Presley recorded them in Hollywood in three sessions from 30 April thru 9 May.
