On this date in 1965 – The 1964–65 New York Worlds Fair closes after a two-year run. More than 51 million people had attended the event. I was fortunate enough that my parents kept my brother and I from school one day and we took the train from Trenton, NJ to NYC to attend the World;s Fair. In 1973 – OPEC starts an oil embargo against a number of western countries, considered to have helped Israel in its war against Syria. I remember the odd-even days at gas stations trying to get the allotted 8 gallon max. What a nightmare. Thankfully I had a VW Bug that got great mileage. In 1979 – The Department of Education Organization Act is signed into law creating the US Department of Education and US Department of Health and Human Services. Two of Jimmy Carter;s biggest mistakes - and THAT is saying something. In 1989 – 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (7.1 on the Richter scale) hits the San Francisco Bay Area and causes 57 deaths directly (and 6 indirectly). Due to the sports coverage of the 1989 World Series, it became the first major earthquake in the United States that was broadcast live on national television. The World Series took 15 days to complete in a 4 game sweep by the As over the Giants due to structural damage throughout the area. Notable Birthdays: 1902 – Irene Ryan, American actress (d. 1973). Daisy Granny Moses,on The Beverly Hillbillies. She was one of the few who found success in vaudeville, radio, film, television and Broadway. 1918 – Rita Hayworth, American actress, singer, dancer, and producer (d. 1987) 1921 – Tom Poston, American actor (d. 2007). He was a very, very, very funny man. His portrayal of bumbling country handyman George Utley on Newhart was knee-slapping funny. He even got to to marry Suzanne Pleshette. 1933 – The Singing Nun, Belgian singer-songwriter, guitarist, and nun (d. 1985). Heres something to stick in your head Dominique, nique, nique... 1938 – Evel Knievel, American motorcycle rider and stuntman (d. 2007). Insanity defined. 1940 – Jim Smith, English footballer and manager. Not to be confused with the 42 billion other Jim Smiths. 1948 – George Wendt, American actor. Without him (and Norm), Cheers was unwatchable. 1962 – Mike Judge, American animator, director, screenwriter, producer and actor. Beevis and Butthead and so much more.
