On this date in 1969, I was ten years old, living in my familys home in Heidelberg, Kentucky. It was a Sunday night, like tonight, and Bonanza was on TV. After the show was over, the news reports broke in, and before I went to bed, I saw those flickering images from the surface of the moon, and heard the crackling broadcast of Neil Armstrongs first words from the surface of the moon, Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind . . . My great grandmother, who was born in 1889, and grew up in the era of horses and buggies, was already asleep in the other room. I had followed the space program from virtually its beginnings, and thought this was the greatest event in the history of the world. Now, looking back on Apollo technology, with its analog instruments and computers with less computing power than my iPhone today, I realize that this was the horse and buggy era of technology compared to today. What technological advances will my recently born grandchildren live to see? I imagine they will, among other things, see lots of re-runs of Bonanza, including the one that ran on July 20, 1969.
